We’re looking for a scrappy full-stack software engineer based in London to join our fintech startup at the ground floor. This role is a good fit for those who are excited about independence, impact, and contributing to the battle against scams and financial crime. If this sounds like a match for you, read on to learn more ⬇️

About Tunic Pay 🎽

We’re on a mission to rid the world of scams. Last year, consumers reported over 200k scams in the UK alone, and it’s likely that many more went unreported. At TunicPay, we’re rearchitecting payments infrastructure to bring that number to 0 by giving unprecedented insight into and control of each transaction. Our core infrastructure is building Recipient Intelligence, and eventually the governance for real-time payments.

We are a super early fintech startup — to give you a sense of just how early, we closed our seed round last November 💡, and our team is <10 people today (depending on your start date!)🧤. There’s a ton of exciting challenges we need to tackle, from integrating diverse data about participants in the payments network, to developing the next generation of security & privacy-protecting protocols, to crafting delightful experiences that drive conversion through our consumer-facing touchpoints. And as if that’s not hard enough, we are working with some of our customers’ most sensitive data and need to deliver 24/7/365 uptime. Our goals are almost ludicrously ambitious, but scams have to be solved, and we think we’re the team to do it 🦸‍♀️.

We believe in strong in-person collaboration so are requiring 3+ days a week jamming together in our London office (Covent Garden for now).

About us 👋

Nicky (co-founder) previously co-founded Nova Credit, helping immigrants access credit. We’ve served millions of immigrants, raised over $130M (GC, Index, KPCB), built a team of 100+ people across three continents. Before that it was Stanford MBA, Bain, international development, and Cambridge. 🇬🇷-🇬🇧 married to🇰🇷-🇺🇲, parent, intermittent reader/runner, smack talker.

Nico (co-founder) spent the last 4 years as CEO of Casai, LatAm’s largest short-term rental operator with almost 2k apartments in 🇲🇽 and 🇧🇷 and hosted >100k guests. Previously met Nicky as Nova Credit’s first biz hire right after the seed round. Started career @ BCG after studying at Yale 🐶 & Oxford. Born in 🇵🇭 & grew up in Memphis, TN, the birthplace of rock & roll 🎸.

Cyrus (Engineering Lead) has experience across a wide range of industries and has built large-scale systems in a variety of sensitive contexts from banking 🏦 to defence 🛡️. Has been working with Nicky and Nico since late last year. Ex-Palantir and Morgan Stanley, before that Imperial College. Statistically most likely to be found walking my dog 🐕 and would often rather be climbing rocks 🧗‍♂️.

And here is a lil video about us as humans (feel free to watch @2x 🙈) 👇. A small caveat that this was recorded a while back so our team is bigger (and our plants are happier!):

About you 🤓

Here are some thoughts on who would be successful in the role. We know we won’t be able to assess these from your CV, but our interview process will be designed around them:

  • Scrappiness: You can autonomously drive value without the comforts of existing infrastructure, developer tooling, and so on.
  • Flexible, full-stack mindset: You have a strong understanding of both front-end and back-end technologies and can effectively work across the entire stack, from the user interface to the database and everything in between. You are unafraid of jumping into new terrain; you have a propensity for picking up new tools and technologies.
  • Collaboration: You are an excellent communicator and can work effectively in a collaborative, cross-functional team environment, contributing to all stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • Some hard skills we’d value

  • Technologies: Expertise with modern front-end and backend languages. Right now we’re using React / Typescript on the front-end and Rust on the back-end, but we’re agnostic about what specifically you’ve used before and believe in using the right tool for the job.
  • Infrastructure: You’ve worked with cloud technologies (e.g. Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, Terraform), and providers (e.g. AWS, GCP) in the past.
  • Security: You believe that security should not be retrofitted and are well versed in best practices for protecting against vulnerabilities like injections, XSS, CSRF, and so on.
  • Accessibility: You create inclusive experiences, e.g. through your understanding of WCAG standards, and your work maximises usability for everyone who interacts with a system.
  • Years of experience: 4 or more. We’re looking for professionals who can structure their own work and think strategically getting their hands dirty. But we’re not overly strict on this one.
  • Industry: We’re building on top of technical payments infrastructure so prior experience in fintech or banking is a plus, but experience building large-scale systems in any sensitive data context will get you off on the right foot.
  • As with any start up, we’re driven to find people who can jump into lots of different areas. So please treat this list is illustrative at best, and if you don’t feel you tick 100% of the boxes we’d still love to hear from you.

    Stuff you’d do

  • Build robust, well-tested, and performant full-stack web applications and services that integrate with our customers' systems to drive down scams.
  • Design and implement intuitive RESTful APIs for seamless integration and scalability.
  • Develop responsive and user-friendly front-end interfaces using modern frameworks and libraries.
  • Contribute to crucial early technical decision-making & culture-building: technical standards, stack, tools, code reviews (on both sides of the table!), etc.
  • Understand and drive adherence to best practices for security and data management.
  • Understand and advocate for best practices for accessible design.
  • Implement automated testing and continuous integration/continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines to streamline the development and deployment process.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry best practices & technology, including finding ways to be efficient with genAI tooling.
  • Not-yet-our-values 🔌

We haven’t developed company values yet, but a note on some of the characteristics we seek:

  • 🟢 “Yes and”: This business needs creativity – we value well-channelled positivity (and the discomfort of ideation!) above intellectual scepticism.
  • 🏎️ “Speed is the new steadfast ”: This market opportunity is ours for the taking so we deploy velocity by default (UNLESS identified high risk). We don’t value effort (sorry!), but we value outcomes + efficiency⚡.
  • 🏹 “Straight-shooters”: We tell it like it is. To our customers, our investors, ourselves.
  • ↩️ “Change is the only constant”: We prize flexibility and adaptability – we don’t overpromise on a single strategy or career path.
  • 🧭 “Taking the decade-long view”: We are focused on longevity, not hype. So our team will remain “small is beautiful”, and won’t take ethical shortcuts.
  • 👹 “Pranksters not fraudsters”: We’re serious about our work, but not about ourselves. We delight in bringing a little troll spirit.
  • Last but not least, the interview process ⏳

We are seeking to make our interview as experiential as possible in order for both sides to get the most signal on what it would be like to work together.

  • Initial application (<2 mins): Submit your LinkedIn (or CV) in the application link below (we don’t believe in cover letters or unnecessary work here!) 👇
  • Engineering lead meet-and-greet (45 mins): Introductory call with Cyrus — get to know each other a little and do some open-ended problem-solving together.
  • “On-site” (3 hours, can be done remotely): Deep dive interviews with Cyrus focusing on algorithms, systems design and architecture (we’ll share some materials ahead-of-time to help you prepare). Plus some time with the co-founders to better understand the team and the business — this is as much for you as it is for us!
  • References and offer: Ideally over dinner!
