Your Role
As Director, Government Strategic Engagement, you will own the strategy and execution for our largest and most complex municipal client, impacting hundreds of thousands of public servants and millions of residents. You'll be the person who turns a complex public program into a clear plan that busy city agencies can execute, so constituents actually sign up, take action, and realize savings.
You'll build key relationships across the city, coordinate teams, keep integrations and reporting on track, manage risks, and lead clear, outcome-focused updates with senior leaders. You'll work closely with Product, Marketing, Member Success, and Data teams to ensure government employees and city residents get real results. Your work will directly support public servants and residents navigating student debt while proving Summer's value to cities and states nationwide. This role reports to the Chief Customer Officer.
What You'll Do
- Own the Outcome: Act as the central architect and project lead for our largest and most complex government contract. You will serve as the primary strategic point of contact for all stakeholders, ensuring that our internal teams and city agencies stay aligned on the roadmap. You will be the primary driver of the project's success by identifying risks, unblocking cross-functional teams, and orchestrating the multi-channel efforts required to hit our user engagement, acquisition, and benefit usage targets—ultimately ensuring a seamless renewal.
- Drive Strategy: Connect day-to-day execution to the bigger picture. Use data and on-the-ground insights to inform senior stakeholder conversations and keep acquisition and engagement priorities sharp.
- Drive New User Acquisition: Lead a multi-channel adoption strategy spanning executive stakeholder activation, complex agency integrations, and grassroots community marketing with support from Executive, Client Success, Community Engagement, and Marketing teams.
- Be the Internal Advocate: Partner fiercely with Product and Marketing to optimize the user journey, translate complex government requirements into product roadmap priorities, and accelerate user adoption.
- Improve the Playbook: Document the best practices for government success and improve our playbook for other cities.
- Run a Steady Rhythm: Weekly working sessions with key stakeholders, clear action notes, and weekly updates and monthly reviews that show what's working, what's off track, and what comes next.
- Travel: Occasional travel (up to 10%) for client visits, conferences, and team gatherings.
You Might Be a Fit If You Have
- Excited to Lead Through Influence: This is a senior individual contributor role where success comes from owning the plan, running the room, and driving follow‑through. You have a track record of personally driving massive, multi-stakeholder initiatives across the finish line from strategy to execution. You're experienced in working cross-functionally to align company resources for success.
- Government-Fluent: You've worked in or deeply with the public sector. You understand the pace, the political nuances, and the unique hurdles of government bureaucracies.
- Deeply Credible in a Room: You can command a room of skeptics, build instant credibility with city leadership, and motivate large teams across multiple agencies and departments to take action.
- Data-Fluent: You don't need to be an analyst, but you must be comfortable diving into the details to find opportunities to increase acquisition and uptake across marketing and product.
- NYC-Based: We have a strong preference for local boots on the ground who can bring in-person energy to our local NYC client.
Added Bonus If You Have
