About Madica:
Madica is a 12-18-month structured investment program for pre-seed stage African startups - especially those that receive a disproportionately small share of venture funding, such as those led by women or by local founders or those that operate outside well-established tech hubs. Madica was born out of the need to empower mission-driven founders by democratizing access to world-class company-building support, which is available today only to a few well-networked entrepreneurs.
We invest up to $200,000 in participating companies at the beginning of their journey so they can hire the right team and focus on building the business. We complement this with programmatic support including access to hands-on mentorship by exceptional founders and operators, training and coaching on company building by industry specialists, and targeted interactions with prospective investors to ensure that later-stage capital is available as companies grow.
Madica was launched by Flourish Ventures, a global venture firm that backs disruptive technology companies whose entrepreneurs seek to redefine the financial services sector and whose innovations help people achieve financial health and prosperity. We are uniquely positioned to support these early-stage entrepreneurs: we have access to capital, networks, and an extensive knowledge base from our experience serving entrepreneurs across the globe – and the credibility in Africa to pull this off.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly organized and strategic Finance and Operations Manager based in Africa.
As Finance and Operations Manager, you will help us implement systems to manage compliance and scale operations effectively. You will also provide thought partnership in shaping and leading exciting strategic initiatives working closely with the Head of Madica. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in finance/accounting and a keen interest in project/operations management, ideally with a background in consulting/corporate strategy, venture capital, investment banking, and/or finance/operations management in a start-up environment.
To be truly successful in this role, you would need to care deeply about helping underrepresented founders succeed, already have a track record of doing so, be passionate about designing and managing systems for scale, and hold the deep belief that anything is possible with our powers combined.
Responsibilities:
Finance Operations:
- Collate data, and coordinate reviews and follow-ups on management accounts monthly/quarterly as required.
- Collate data, coordinate reviews and follow-ups on Audits/tax reviews as required
- Manage compliance requirements for all Madica entities
Internal Reporting:
- Prepare monthly updates for key stakeholders
- Prepare quarterly updates/documentation for board meetings
- Calendar management and executive support for key meetings e.g. IC, board meetings, etc.
Ongoing Vendor Operations:
- Manage reviews of vendor and partnership contracts in partnership with legal teams
- Manage and streamline vendor payment operations
- Support the RFP process for bringing on new program vendors
Research and Impact Tracking:
- Coordinate annual portfolio surveys
- Set up and manage internal mechanisms to track Madica's impact
- Support ongoing research/data-gathering initiatives
Process Documentation/Ongoing Process Improvements:
- Support streamlining of investment and program processes
- Spearhead documentation of program playbooks
Logistics:
- Coordinate team travel
- Draft logistics updates and support logistics for participants of Madica founder retreats
- Support event planning during ecosystem and immersion trips
Strategic Initiatives e.g.:
- Spearhead special projects and strategic initiatives
Education, Experience and Requirements:
- Degree in finance/accounting and/or similar relevant qualification;
- Passion for African startups and experience working in the African startup ecosystem ideally with a background in consulting/corporate strategy, venture capital, investment banking, and/or finance/operations management in a start-up environment;
- Comfort with developing and analyzing complex financial models
- Strong stakeholder management abilities and ability to communicate effectively with different stakeholders in a structured manner;
- Strong execution and program management skills; and ability to successfully balance multiple projects simultaneously;
- Ability to make data-driven decisions based on strong analytical skills and attention to detail;
- Highly structured yet flexible and able to work in a dynamic environment;
- High-energy and independent self-starter, entrepreneurial spirit, and great teammate;
- Comfort with working in a highly collaborative, global team.
- Comfort with tech tools e.g. CRMs, data analysis, and presentation tools.
