WBG Pioneer Background/Organizational Context The World Bank Group (WBG) Oman Country Management Unit (CMU) supports the Government of Oman in advancing economic diversification, private sector-led growth, human capital development, and sustainable development aligned with Oman Vision 2040. Oman faces a range of pressing environmental challenges, including land degradation, biodiversity loss, desertification, coastal ecosystem pressures, and the sustainable management of natural resources in an arid and rapidly developing context. At the same time, Oman is deepening its environmental commitments under international frameworks including the Paris Agreement, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The WBG Oman CMU supports analytical work, policy dialogue, and public engagement to help the Government address these challenges and transition toward a greener, more resilient economy. The Environment Intern will support the CMU's public-facing knowledge and engagement work on environmental topics, contributing to research, written outputs, stakeholder engagement, and communications that inform government counterparts, civil society, the private sector, and the broader public. The internship offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in environmental development work while contributing to the WBG's mission of ending extreme poverty and promoting shared prosperity on a livable planet. Duties and Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Country Management Unit team, the intern will support environment-related analytical, knowledge, and communications activities across the WBG Oman portfolio. Research and Policy Analysis: • Conduct literature reviews and background research on environmental policy, biodiversity, natural resource management, land use, coastal ecosystems, and green economy topics relevant to Oman and the wider Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. • Track and document Oman's progress against national environmental commitments, including those under the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC), Vision 2040 environmental targets, and international conventions such as the CBD. • Compile and analyze environmental indicators, data sets, and country-level statistics to support analytical work. • Benchmark environmental policies and good practices from comparable arid and Gulf contexts relevant to Oman's development priorities. Knowledge Products and Communications: • Support the preparation of public-facing outputs including policy briefs, briefing notes, blog posts, infographics, presentations, and social media content on environment-related themes. • Translate technical environmental content into accessible and engaging narratives for non-specialist audiences including government partners, civil society, and the public. • Assist in the preparation of sections of country environmental assessments, country partnership frameworks, or other analytical and operational documents as directed by the supervisor. Stakeholder Engagement and Events: • Support the organization and documentation of environment-related workshops, knowledge-sharing events, consultations, and stakeholder dialogues. • Prepare event summaries, talking points, presentations, and background materials for meetings with government counterparts and development partners. Other Duties: • Provide operational support to the CMU's environment-related activities as required. • Undertake other related assignments consistent with the objectives of the internship.
